Crowns and Bridges

What’s a dental crown?

A crown is basically a cap that goes over the top of your tooth. It’s designed to restore the tooth to its full size and strength when your tooth is damaged, either by decay or a traumatic injury. Acclaim Dental customizes your crown so it perfectly matches and aligns with your surrounding teeth. Once it’s in place, the crown looks and feels just like your natural tooth.

What’s a dental bridge?

A bridge is a tooth replacement option. If you need to replace a missing tooth or set of teeth, you have a few options. You can get dentures, which you remove and place in your mouth as needed but some people find uncomfortable. You can get a dental implant, which roots the replacement tooth or teeth in your jawbone but requires a surgery. Or you can get a dental bridge.

There are three types of dental bridges:

Traditional bridges

Traditional bridges are held in place by two crowns, one that goes over the top of the neighboring tooth on either side of your missing tooth or teeth. Affixing the replacement tooth or teeth to these anchoring crowns ensures everything is held firmly in place.

Cantilever bridges

If you only have an abutting tooth on one side of the missing tooth, you can choose a cantilever bridge. In this case, the single abutting tooth gets a crown to hold the replacement tooth in place.

Maryland bridges

Rather than using a crown, Maryland bridges are held in place by affixing a metal framework to the back of the teeth on either side of your missing tooth or teeth.

What’s the process for getting a crown or bridge?

Whether you get a single crown or multiple crowns (in the case of a traditional bridge), the process is very similar. During your first appointment at Acclaim Dental, the dedicated team prepares your tooth for the crown by removing a small amount of enamel. This allows the crown to lay flush with your surrounding teeth.

They then take a mold of the prepared tooth so they can create a crown that fits perfectly. You go home with a temporary crown to protect the tooth.

Once your crown is ready, you return to Acclaim Dental so they can bond it to your tooth. You leave with a restored, beautiful, strong set of teeth.
