Periodontal Treatment

Why are healthy gums important?

It’s important to get treatment for gum health issues right away because periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.

Healthy gums aren’t just important for your teeth, either. Periodontal disease increases your risk for a range of other health conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Dementia
  • Chronic respiratory disease

In short, keeping your gums healthy helps you protect your teeth and your overall well-being.

What is periodontal disease?

There are two common types of periodontal disease.

Gingivitis is a mild and common type of gum disease. When left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis.

It’s caused by plaque remaining on your teeth, turning into tartar (which you can’t remove with a toothbrush), and attracting bacteria. That bacteria causes inflammation in your gums.

Gingivitis is characterized by swollen, red, tender gums. If you notice bleeding when you floss, talk to Acclaim Dental about your gum health.

Left unchecked, gingivitis develops into periodontitis. This gum disease damages the soft tissue of your gums and can even destroy the bone of your teeth.

With both gingivitis and periodontitis, you need a professional teeth cleaning to remove the stuck-on tartar from your teeth, allowing your gums to heal. Fortunately, that kind of periodontal treatment is available at Acclaim Dental.

How does periodontal treatment work?

The Acclaim Dental team is dedicated to keeping your mouth healthy. They’re experts in scaling and root planing, a process that removes plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth (scaling) and from the root of your tooth beneath your gum line (root planing).

During root planing, they also smooth the root of your tooth to prevent future tartar buildup and encourage your gum to reattach to the tooth root. This procedure is performed in the comfort of their office. Generally, patients don’t need any anesthesia.

In many cases of periodontal disease, scaling and root planing maintained by proper oral care at home is sufficient to reverse gum disease.

But if your periodontal disease damages any of the structures within your mouth, additional treatment may be needed. Acclaim Dental analyzes your gums and talks with you about your treatment options so you know what to expect.

Don’t let red, irritated gums go untreated. Call Acclaim Dental or schedule your appointment with their team of periodontal treatment experts online today.
